Researchers from the University of Hawaii at Manoa ventured 6,000 miles to McLane for pre-deployment profiler training in June. Doug Luther, a physical oceanographer, will use extended McLane Moored Profilers to research the structure of the tides and eddies around the island of Oahu, Hawaii. The extended MMP was chosen for this project for its ability to provide 50% more battery capacity than the standard profiler, allowing more profiles per day to resolve the tides. The two day training consisted of bench testing, programming a deployment and recovering the MMP from the 15 meter test tank in McLane’s lab.
