13 October 2014: We are pleased to announce that Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) has granted McLane Research Laboratories, Inc. a license to manufacture and sell the Environmental Sample Processor (ESP). The ESP, designed and developed by MBARI, provides in situ collection and analysis of water samples from the subsurface ocean. Pictured, at left, is ESP Waldo, built for MBARI in September 2014.
The instrument is an electromechanical, fluidic system designed to collect discrete water samples, concentrate microorganisms or particles, and automate application of molecular probes in order to identify target microorganisms and their gene products. Data generated are then available for remote retrieval and analysis in near real-time. The data sheet can be found here (link).
From 2009, the ESP has been marketed and sold by SPYGLASS Water Technologies. In August 2014, SPYGLASS exited from the ESP market, which resulted in McLane negotiating with MBARI to obtain a license to continue manufacture and support of the ESP technology. McLane has been the exclusive manufacturer of all commercial ESPs for SPYGLASS and worked closely with MBARI during the initial technology transfer period. Under the new license, McLane will continue to manufacture, sell, and service complete ESP instruments, components, and other auxiliary items or subassemblies. Contact us for more information on the ESP.
