McLane GM Jonathan Mogul recently accompanied University of Rhode Island (URI) researchers to deploy a Particle and Phytoplankton sampler (PPS) on a custom-designed buoy in Quonset Bay, RI. Researchers from URI’s Davies Lab utilized a relatively small boat and two scuba divers to hang the PPS on the side of the buoy just below the surface. The PPS will collect samples until mid-June for phytoplankton analysis.
“It is always a great experience to participate in the deployment of our instruments with our customers,” said Mogul. ” This was a particularly unique deployment utilizing divers and an ingenious buoy design by URI for the rapid deployment and recovery from a small boat without the need to recover and redeploy the entire mooring.”
The PPS collects 24 individual filtered in situ particulate water samples onto 47mm filters. A fixative value option can treat samples for preservation, and an antifouling flush option is available to prevent bio-fouling between sample events.
