Cabled capabilities in both instruments provide two way communication for Adaptive Sampling. This feature allows user triggered event sampling during the deployment.
The RAS is a deep water or coastal time series sampler that collects 48 ambient water and suspended material samples of 500ml or 100ml each in isolated Tedlar® bags. Optional in-line pre-filters can also be applied. The PPS is an autonomous particulate sampler that filters up to 24 individual water samples through 47mm filters.
For VISIONS’13, the RAS will sample hydrothermal vent fluids. The PPS will filter and preserve microbial DNA. Scientists such as David Butterfield of NOAA-PMEL will deploy these instruments to identify microbial organisms and gather information about their unique metabolisms.
