In 1983, the first CD arrived in music stores. Motorola began to test cell phone service. In Falmouth, MA, McLane founders Dr. Sus Honjo and Ken Doherty were busy building a new type of sediment sampler in a garage. Fast forward 25 years. MP3 file downloads outpace CD sales. In 2007, 1.1 billion cell phones were sold worldwide. Certainly many changes have taken place since 1983.
For McLane, those early Sediment Traps have evolved into a new generation of samplers, profilers and flotation modules deployed in the world’s oceans and many fresh water locations. Though we now build many other instruments, our commitment to excellence in science remains as strong today as it was when it all began back in 1983. A 25th Anniversary Party and Open House are planned for May 3, 2008 in Falmouth to celebrate with everyone who has been part of our story.
