Fifty years ago on April 22, 1970, Earth Day was born as 20 million Americans mobilized to promote a new way forward for our planet. Half a century later, Earth Day has become a Global call to action and a chance to take a deeper dive.
“There’s nothing wrong with enjoying looking at the surface of the ocean itself, except that when you finally see what goes on underwater, you realize that you’ve been missing the whole point of the ocean. Staying on the surface all the time is like going to the circus and staring at the outside of the tent.” – Dave Barry
As you celebrate Earth Day’s 50th Anniversary, consider these three interactive ideas:
- Connect with Earth Day On-Line Events — Earth Day 2020 is digital for the first time in its history. On-line events throughout the day include surprise performances and celebrity messages.
- Pick an Earth Day Toolkit — Earth Day has several downloadable Science and Education toolkits to encourage, engage, and inspire. Try some new material whether you’re home schooling a student or just need a news break.
- Check into the Twilight Zone — At 7:30pm EST April 22, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) premieres a 26 minute film, A Window into the Twilight Zone, that follows WHOI oceanographer Andone Lavery and a team of researchers as they explore the hidden frontier of the ocean’s twilight zone. The Filmmaker and researchers from the expedition will answer audience questions via YouTube Chat.
